Red Meat Advisory Council Abandons Net Zero

Australia’s cattle industry has officially withdrawn from its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

The Red Meat Advisory Council (RMAC), which confirmed the decision, said the target was no longer achievable within the timeframe set by the industry in 2017. The decision confirms by represents a significant shift in the environmental positioning of the red meat sector.

RMAC Chair John McKillop acknowledged in an ABC Rural report on 27 June 2025 that while progress has been made, the industry is not on track to meet the original goal. “We just, quite frankly, realised we’re not going to get to carbon neutral by 2030,” he said.

The focus is now shifting to reducing emissions intensity—measuring emissions per unit of production—rather than striving for absolute zero emissions. This approach balances environmental accountability with commercial sustainability, particularly important for livestock producers navigating variable seasons, commodity prices, and input costs.

Despite stepping away from the 2030 net-zero target, the industry has already made notable gains. News outlet The Guardian, a traditionally left-leaning publication that champions environmental causes, reported in May 2025 that the Australian red meat sector has recorded a 78 percent reduction in net emissions since 2005. Continued efforts include feed additives to reduce methane, improved pasture management, and breeding programs.

For those involved in farming and agribusiness, the change underscores the importance of adaptive sustainability strategies. While some regulatory pressure may ease, stakeholders should still expect investor and lender scrutiny around emissions performance.
